Trek Overview – Singalila Ridge Trek (Phalut–Sandakphu Route)
The Singalila Ridge Trek is one of the most breathtaking high-altitude trekking experiences in the Eastern Himalayas, connecting the iconic viewpoints of Phalut and Sandakphu along the famous Singalila Ridge that forms the natural border between India and Nepal. Organized by Parvat Exploration, this 7-day Himalayan trek offers trekkers an unforgettable journey through dense rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, traditional Himalayan villages, and panoramic mountain ridges.
Starting from Sepi near New Jalpaiguri (NJP), the trail gradually ascends through picturesque villages like Ramam, Samanden, and Gorkhey, giving trekkers a glimpse into the unique culture and lifestyle of the Himalayan communities. As the trek progresses, the landscape transforms into high-altitude ridges with uninterrupted views of some of the world’s tallest peaks.
The highlight of this trek is the spectacular Himalayan panorama visible from Phalut and Sandakphu, where trekkers can witness four of the five highest mountains in the world — Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and the majestic Kanchenjunga. The famous “Sleeping Buddha” formation of Kanchenjunga is best seen from Sandakphu, making this trek a paradise for mountain lovers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.
With a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and breathtaking scenery, the Singalila Ridge Trek with Parvat Exploration is ideal for trekkers seeking a moderate Himalayan trek with some of the finest mountain views in India.
Day 1: Drive from NJP to Sepi (6,400 ft)
Your adventure with Parvat Exploration begins with a scenic drive from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) to the peaceful Himalayan village of Sepi, located at an altitude of 6,400 ft. The 130 km drive takes around 7 hours and winds through lush tea gardens, dense forests, and picturesque hill settlements of North Bengal. As the road climbs gradually toward the Singalila region, trekkers are welcomed by fresh mountain air and beautiful views of the Eastern Himalayas. Sepi serves as the perfect starting point for the Singalila Ridge Trek, offering a calm environment to rest and prepare for the upcoming Himalayan journey.
Day 2: Trek from Sepi to Samanden via Ramam (7,500 ft)
The trek begins with a beautiful trail from Sepi to Samanden, passing through the charming Himalayan village of Ramam. Covering around 14–15 km in 7–8 hours, the trail takes you through dense forests of oak, bamboo, and rhododendron, typical of the Singalila National Park ecosystem. The route offers glimpses of remote mountain life, suspension bridges, and crystal-clear streams. By the time you reach Samanden, one of the most picturesque villages in the region, trekkers are rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan landscapes.
Day 3: Trek from Samanden to Phalut via Gorkhey (11,500 ft)
Today’s trek is one of the most scenic days of the Singalila Ridge adventure. Starting from Samanden, the trail descends briefly to the beautiful valley of Gorkhey, a postcard-perfect Himalayan hamlet surrounded by forests and rivers. From here, the climb towards Phalut (3,500 m / 11,500 ft) begins. The trek of approximately 15 km takes about 7–8 hours and gradually opens up to magnificent views of the Himalayan giants. At Phalut, trekkers witness spectacular panoramas of Mount Kanchenjunga, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu, making it one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the Eastern Himalayas.
Day 4: Trek from Phalut to Thokum (11,200 ft)
The trail from Phalut to Thokum follows the famous Singalila Ridge, which forms the natural border between India and Nepal. The trek of 11–12 km takes around 6–7 hours and offers continuous views of the snow-covered Himalayan range. Walking along open ridges and alpine meadows, trekkers enjoy a relatively gradual descent while witnessing the vast Himalayan skyline. Thokum, located at 3,415 m, is a peaceful campsite surrounded by pristine mountain wilderness.
Day 5: Trek from Thokum to Aal (11,600 ft)
This shorter yet scenic trek of around 9–10 km takes approximately 4–5 hours. The trail continues along the Singalila ridge line, passing through rolling alpine landscapes and high-altitude meadows. Trekkers can enjoy uninterrupted views of the majestic Kanchenjunga massif throughout the day. Aal, situated at around 3,500 m, provides another stunning vantage point to witness dramatic Himalayan sunsets and star-filled mountain skies.
Day 6: Trek from Aal to Timburey via Sandakphu (11,900 ft)
Today is one of the highlights of the trek as you reach Sandakphu (3,650 m / 11,900 ft), the highest point in West Bengal and one of the most famous viewpoints in the Eastern Himalayas. From Sandakphu, trekkers can see the legendary “Sleeping Buddha” formation of Mount Kanchenjunga along with Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu on clear days. After enjoying the breathtaking Himalayan panorama, the trail descends through forests and mountain villages toward Timburey (2,100 m / 6,800 ft). The trek covers around 14 km and takes about 7–8 hours.
Day 7: Trek from Timburey to Srikhola and Drive to NJP
On the final day, trekkers descend from Timburey to Srikhola, a short 3 km walk that takes about an hour. Srikhola is a charming riverside village known for its wooden bridges and peaceful surroundings. After completing the trek, a scenic 130 km drive takes you back to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) via Sepi. 🏔️ Pre-Trek Preparations | Parvat Exploration
At Parvat Exploration, we believe that trekking is more than just a journey through mountains — it’s a journey within. While the scenic beauty and untouched trails offer unforgettable memories, they also demand a fair share of physical endurance and mental resilience. It’s not just about being fit — it’s about being ready.
Whether you’re taking your first step on a trail or are a seasoned trekker preparing for a high-altitude adventure, here’s how to get trek-ready, the Parvat way.
🫀 Prerequisites of Trekking
1. Cardiovascular Endurance & Stamina
High-altitude treks test your lungs more than your legs. Building cardio endurance is non-negotiable. Jogging, swimming, cycling, or brisk walking — choose your style but stay consistent. Make it a goal-driven journey, just like your trek.
Progressive Stamina Plan:
-
🎯 Start with completing 5 km in 35 minutes or less
-
🏃♂️ Push further to 5 km in under 30 minutes
-
🏁 Before your trek, aim to finish 10 km in 60 minutes or less
Doing this 4-5 times a week, at least 2 months before your trek, can make a massive difference.
💪 Strength Training
Most Himalayan trails are a combination of ascents, descents, and flat stretches — think of it as climbing an eternal staircase. Building leg strength is crucial to manage these elevations while carrying a loaded backpack.
Recommended Routine:
-
Squats – Begin with 3 sets of 8 reps, aim to increase to 3 sets of 15 reps
-
Add lunges, step-ups, and planks to your routine for better balance and core strength
Strong legs = less fatigue = more views to soak in. 🏞️
🤸♂️ Flexibility
Trekking involves unpredictable terrains and movements — hopping over rocks, ducking under branches, and stretching across ledges. Without flexibility, even the smallest action can feel like a strain.
Daily Stretching Essentials:
-
Hamstrings
-
Quadriceps
-
Hip Flexors
-
Lower Back
-
Shoulders
Just 15–20 minutes of stretching each day can help relax muscles, improve posture, and prevent cramps or stiffness during the trek.
❤️🔥 Cardiovascular + Speed Endurance Mix
This is where most of your training time should go. A perfect mix of speed and endurance helps your heart adapt to thin air and long-distance trekking.
Sample Routine:
-
🏃 Start with 5 km in 45 mins
-
Gradually progress to 7 km in 45 mins
-
Aim for 10 km in 80–90 mins without breaks
The trick is consistency — every week counts.
🏋️ Back & Core Strength
A Himalayan backpack may only weigh 6–10 kg, but it feels heavier the higher you go. Building core strength and shoulder stability helps you carry that weight with ease.
Try these:
-
Planks (front & side)
-
Shoulder shrugs
-
Deadlifts (light-weighted)
-
Back extensions
Training your core will help you maintain posture and prevent lower back strain.
🧘 Mental Preparation
Even the strongest trekker may be tested by sudden weather changes or tough climbs. That’s where mental strength takes the lead.
At Parvat Exploration, we encourage practicing:
-
Breathing Exercises (Pranayama)
-
Meditation (10–15 mins daily)
-
Mindful Silence / Nature Walks
Mental calmness boosts your decision-making ability and allows you to be present — to feel every whisper of the wind, every crunch of gravel beneath your boots.
🔚 Final Word from Parvat Exploration
The Himalayas are humbling. They test and teach. Preparation is your way of respecting the mountain. Start early, stay regular, and trek mindfully.
Because out there, it’s just you, the trail, and the mountain calling.
