Kang Yatse II Expedition (6,250 m) – Markha Valley, Ladakh

The Kang Yatse II Expedition is an exciting high-altitude climbing experience in the heart of Ladakh, combining the beauty of the Markha Valley Trek with the thrill of summiting a 6,250 m Himalayan peak. The journey begins in Leh with essential acclimatization and cultural exploration before entering the spectacular Markha Valley, known for its remote villages, ancient monasteries, and dramatic mountain landscapes. As the expedition progresses through Sara, Markha, Hankar, and the vast alpine meadows of Nimaling, trekkers gradually gain altitude while enjoying breathtaking views of the Ladakh and Zanskar ranges.

From the Kang Yatse II Base Camp, climbers undergo technical training and prepare for the summit push. The summit day is a challenging yet rewarding ascent over snow and glacial terrain, culminating at 20,500 ft, where climbers are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges. This expedition is ideal for trekkers and aspiring mountaineers looking to step into the world of high-altitude climbing while experiencing the raw beauty, culture, and adventure of the Ladakh Himalayas with Parvat Exploration.

Kang Yatse II Expedition (6,250 m) – Parvat Exploration
Duration: 10 Days | Region: Markha Valley, Ladakh

Day 1: Arrival in Leh (3,500 m / 11,500 ft)
Your journey begins with your arrival in Leh, the capital of Ladakh, situated at an altitude of 3,500 meters. Upon arrival, our team will receive you and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is reserved for rest and light acclimatization to help your body adjust to the high altitude of the region. Leh’s dry air and thin atmosphere require trekkers to take it slow on the first day. In the evening, you can take a short walk around the Leh market while staying hydrated.

Day 2: Acclimatization and Sightseeing in Leh
This day is dedicated to proper acclimatization, which is crucial for a safe and successful expedition. After breakfast, we will explore some of the famous monasteries and cultural landmarks around Leh. The sightseeing includes visits to Shey Monastery, Thiksey Monastery, the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers at Sangam, and the historic Hemis Monastery, one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh. These short excursions help your body gradually adapt to the altitude while allowing you to experience the rich culture and spiritual heritage of Ladakh. In the evening, the expedition leader will conduct a briefing regarding the trek, safety protocols, and equipment check.

Day 3: Drive from Leh to Skiu (3,400 m / 11,150 ft) and Trek to Sara (3,600 m / 11,800 ft)
After an early breakfast, we begin our journey with a scenic drive from Leh to Skiu, the gateway to the Markha Valley. The drive takes about 2–3 hours and follows the Indus River through dramatic Ladakhi landscapes. From Skiu, the trekking journey officially begins. The trail gradually ascends along the Markha River, passing small villages, mani walls, and prayer flags fluttering in the mountain wind. The trek to Sara is relatively easy and serves as a gentle introduction to the terrain. After reaching Sara village, we set up our campsite near the river and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Markha Valley.

Day 4: Sara to Markha (3,700 m / 12,200 ft)
Today’s trek follows the beautiful Markha River valley as we move deeper into the heart of Ladakh. The trail passes through small hamlets, green patches of barley fields, and traditional Ladakhi houses built with stone and mud. Along the route, trekkers cross wooden bridges and may encounter grazing yaks and sheep herds. The steady ascent allows gradual acclimatization as we make our way to Markha village, one of the largest settlements in the valley. The village is known for its ancient monastery, traditional architecture, and stunning views of surrounding mountains.

Day 5: Markha to Hankar (4,100 m / 13,400 ft)
The trail from Markha to Hankar becomes more dramatic as the valley widens and the landscapes grow more rugged. Snow-capped peaks begin to appear in the distance, and the air grows noticeably thinner. Along the route, trekkers pass ruins of ancient forts and small Buddhist stupas that tell stories of Ladakh’s past. Hankar is the last permanent village in the Markha Valley and offers spectacular views of Kang Yatse Peak, which begins to dominate the skyline. We camp near the village, preparing for higher altitudes in the coming days.

Day 6: Hankar to Nimaling (4,800 m / 15,800 ft)
Today’s trek takes us to the vast high-altitude meadow of Nimaling, one of the most scenic campsites in Ladakh. The trail steadily climbs through wide valleys and rocky terrain while offering breathtaking views of Kang Yatse and nearby peaks. Nimaling is a beautiful grazing ground used by local shepherds during summer, surrounded by towering mountains and open alpine landscapes. This campsite provides incredible views of Kang Yatse II and serves as an important acclimatization point before heading toward the base camp.

Day 7: Nimaling to Kang Yatse II Base Camp (5,100 m / 16,700 ft)
The trek from Nimaling to the base camp is short but significant as we enter the alpine glacial environment of the expedition. The trail gradually climbs through rocky moraines and high-altitude terrain, offering closer views of the Kang Yatse massif. Upon reaching base camp, the team sets up tents and prepares for the summit push. The rest of the day is spent resting, hydrating, and preparing gear for the summit attempt. The expedition leader will conduct a technical briefing regarding the route, safety procedures, and climbing strategy.

Day 8: Rest, Acclimatization and Training at Base Camp
This day is reserved for rest and technical preparation. Climbers undergo basic snow and ice training, including the use of crampons, ice axes, ropes, and climbing techniques required for the summit attempt. The team practices movement on snow slopes and learns safety procedures such as self-arrest techniques. Adequate rest is important to conserve energy for the summit day. After dinner, climbers retire early as the summit push generally begins around 11:00 PM, depending on weather and snow conditions.

Day 9: Summit Kang Yatse II (6,250 m / 20,500 ft) and Return to Base Camp
The summit push begins late at night under a sky full of Himalayan stars. Equipped with headlamps, climbers gradually ascend snow slopes and glacial terrain under the guidance of experienced mountaineering leaders. The climb is physically demanding but extremely rewarding. As dawn breaks, the surrounding peaks of the Zanskar and Karakoram ranges become visible, creating an unforgettable alpine panorama. Reaching the summit of Kang Yatse II at 6,250 meters offers breathtaking views of the Ladakh Himalayas. After celebrating the achievement, the team carefully descends back to base camp for well-deserved rest.

Day 10: Base Camp to Chokdo via Kongmaru La (5,200 m / 17,300 ft) and Drive to Leh
The final day of the expedition begins with a trek from base camp toward Kongmaru La, one of the highest passes in the Markha Valley. The climb to the pass is challenging but offers spectacular views of rugged mountain landscapes and colorful rock formations typical of Ladakh. After crossing the pass, the trail descends through narrow gorges and dramatic canyon landscapes before reaching Chokdo village. From here, vehicles will transfer the team back to Leh, marking the successful completion of the Kang Yatse II expedition with unforgettable memories of Ladakh’s high mountains.

🔚 Final Word

Parvat Exploration believes a memorable trek is a safe trek. We combine years of mountaineering expertise, world-class equipment, local insight, and a commitment to excellence so you can explore the Himalayas with confidence.

Train your lungs, legs, and mind – all three matter equally.

🏋️‍♂️ Extended Fitness Tips for High-Altitude Mountaineering:

1. Build Endurance Over Speed:
You’re not training for a sprint; you’re preparing for a long-duration challenge. Go for long, slow hikes with a backpack (gradually increase weight). Weekend treks are excellent real-time simulators.

2. Train with a Backpack:
Start adding 5–10 kg weight in your backpack during your stair climbs or trail hikes to mimic the actual load you’ll carry during the expedition.

3. Strengthen Your Ankles & Knees:
Do step-ups, box jumps, and single-leg balances to reduce the risk of injury. Downhill walks strain knees—practice them intentionally.

4. Flexibility & Mobility:
Add yoga and dynamic stretching to your regime. A flexible body handles terrain variations better and helps avoid cramps or joint stiffness.

5. Altitude Acclimatization Strategy:
Get used to climbing high, sleeping low. If you live in the plains, consider weekend hikes at moderate altitudes (2,000m–3,000m).

6. Improve Recovery Time:
Monitor how fast your heart rate returns to normal post-exercise. Better recovery = better adaptation at altitude. Try interval training (HIIT or hill sprints once or twice a week).

7. Mental Conditioning:
Mountaineering tests your grit. Practice meditation, cold showers, solo walks in nature—anything that builds patience and tolerance in tough conditions.

8. Nutrition Discipline:
Eat clean. Focus on complex carbs, good fats, and protein. Hydrate constantly. Add electrolytes to your water when training hard or sweating a lot.

9. Simulate Trek Days:
Try doing back-to-back long hikes over weekends. It mimics multiple trekking days and builds resilience.

10. Sleep Hygiene:
Altitude can mess with sleep. Get into a regular sleep cycle now, and train your body to rest and recover even after late-night activities.
