Brief Description

Bagini Glacier Trek Overview

The Bagini Glacier Trek leads adventurers to the advanced base camp used for mountaineering expeditions to peaks such as Changbang and Kalanka. This trail offers a pristine Himalayan experience, reminiscent of the Everest Base Camp, but without the crowds or commercialization. In recent years, the trek has become increasingly popular among travelers and backpackers, often chosen over the Dharansi Pass Trek within the Nanda Devi Outer Sanctuary (NDOS). The Bagini Glacier Trek is perfect for those seeking to explore the rugged beauty and towering peaks of the region.

History of Bagini Glacier and Changabang Base Camp Route

The twin peaks of Nanda Devi and Nanda Devi East (7,434 m) are renowned for their unmatched grandeur in the Indian Himalayas. Although just below 8,000 meters, Nanda Devi’s magnificence and inaccessibility have captivated explorers for decades. The first successful ascent was achieved in 1937 by the legendary H.W. Tilman and Noel Odell. Reaching Nanda Devi’s inner sanctum posed significant challenges, including a surrounding barrier of peaks averaging 20,000 feet in height.

The Nanda Devi National Park, which encompasses the sanctuary, is encircled by a ring of peaks ranging from 6,000 to 7,500 meters and is drained by the Rishi Ganga via a nearly impassable gorge. In 1934, British explorers Eric Shipton and Tilman successfully entered this inner sanctuary through the Rishi Gorge. To the north of this outer wall lies the Bagini Glacier, now accessible via a 5-6 day trek. The journey begins at Jumma village on the Joshimath-Malari highway and takes trekkers through Ruing, Chaza, Dunagiri, and ultimately to Bagini Glacier and Changabang Base Camp.
